A Javanese Pocong Summoning Ritual

This is a Javanese black magic practice to capture energy of the dead for magician’s own use. Not every dead soul is usable, only those died of violent deaths and those who died young will be considered. The sick and old ghosts are useless. No discrimination intended, just the rules of black magic. Sorry.

The dead souls that failed to enter the intermediate realm of resting place can be seen by people. In Java, people call this type of soul as “pocongan” or “hantu wedon”.  However, in other parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, it is known as "pocong". It is believed that a religious person will need to be called to perform a deliverance service to bring such souls to Barzakh Realm. Failing to do so, the dead souls will roam the human world and may do a lot of mischievous deeds.

It is certainly not a desirable case if these dead souls failed to pass over to the other side as they will feel enormous sadness and being tortured by coldness. More so if these souls are unfortunate enough to meet black magic practitioners; then they may be captured to perform bad deeds.

So for the living, pay particular attention to the grave of the newly dead, especially for those who died on Thursday night; if there is a person persistently sits in front of the grave. For he is waiting for steam or smoke like substance to escape from the soils that has already united with the corpse. A black magician will pull the dead soul so that it will follow him with the below mantra:

“Niat ingsun njaluk kekuatanira

supaya cumondhok mring pribadiningsun

Asipat kandel tumraping urip,

asipat madhep tumraping pepeteng.

Sopo nyimpang keliwatan,

Sopo nyanding tan sumingkir

Sopo sing tak cedhaki, atine ajur koyo wedhak

Nyawiji… nyawiji…. Dumugi mring sihing Allah

Tumeka mring sejatining urip linuwih.”

After the mantra is recited with full appreciation, the power of mantra will bind it to be the “unseen keeper” of the black magician. People who practice this type of ritual will be feared and obeyed by others. People will shiver on making direct eye contact because the pocong spirit will install fear in those peoples’ hearts. A Pocong can also help you to win the heart of the person you desire and make him/her to follow all your wishes.

This ritual is not for people with strong characters and those who pray faithfully to God. Spirit cannot bind to such a person due to his/her strong aura.

The Eastern Hand of Glory: Aji Sirep

Aji Sirep or “The Science To Calm” is equivalent to the Western “hand of glory”. This is a must have knowledge for burglars and thieves since the old days. There are many versions of Aji Sirep, but the most feared of is the Aji Sirip Tanah Perkuburan (grave dirt). The grave dirt is said to be able to put the whole house hold to sleep like corpses, so this will ease the operation of the break in.

The modes of operations of the burglars are almost standard:

First the burglar will determine that his target house whole is a sleep.

Then he would stand in front of the intended house and recite the below mantra:

“Hong ingsun amatak ajiku sirep begananda kang ana indrajit, kumelun nglimuti ing mega malang, bul peteng dhedet alimengan upas racun daribesi, pet pepet kemput bawur wora wari aliweran tekane wimasara, kang katempuh jim setan peri prayangan, gandarwa, jalma manungsa tan wurung ambruk lemes wuta tan bisa krekat, blek sek turu kepati saking kersane Allah.”

The burglar takes a handful of grave dirt and recites the below mantra:

“hong mret mret nuli tumungkul ing pratiwi”

After the mantra, he will storm his foot three times while holding his breath. The grave dirt is afterwards thrown on to the roof of his target before the burglar enters the victim's house.

If anyone wanted to be free from the influence of Sirep; he/she can recite the below mantra before sleeping:

“Hong ingsun amatek ajiku si Aji Dipa kang Ana Bibisana, murup sacakrawalaning panggilingan, apa kang malang-malang ana ing ngarep ingsun, mburi kiwa tengen utawa ngungkul-ngungkuli, lah padha suminggaha, yen nganti kasebet aku si Aji Dipa, lebur dadi awu sirna saking kersaning Allah.”

After recitation, recite further “Hu Allah” three times in your heart.

I last heard from the person who revealed to me that Aji Sirep once mastered can also be used for hypnotic suggestions. Unfortunately I did not put in any effort to learn up this science then; otherwise I can do some experiments to proof the claims. J

Conjuration of Pontianak (Vampire)

The above photo shows a “Paku Pontianak” or “The Pontianak’s Nail”. It can be used to cure non-medical illness. This reminds me of the Phurpa; the Tibetan ritual dagger.

Pontianak is a combined Malay word of “perempuan mati beranak” or literarly “woman who died in childbirth”. It is also known by Kuntilanak in Indonesia. I believe that this is the equivalent of the Western version of female vampire.

There are many stories of its origin:

·         It is said to be the ghost of a woman died during giving birth to her first child.

·         The Javanese folks believed that it is the ghost of a young girl raped and brutally killed.

·         It is the daughter of a Langsuir died during birth. That is the dead mother became Langsuir, the dead daughter became the Pontianak.

It is common belief that a Pontianak will manifest itself as a very beautiful woman wearing perfume of flower (Plumeria Obtusa); it also sometimes carries a baby in its arms. Only on approaching, the beauty of the creature will suddenly transform into an ugly face with fangs; coupled with the smell of rotten corpse.

The female who sees a Pontianak should remain calm; otherwise she might be possessed. Pontianak almost never possesses a male however. A possessed female will tend to keep long finger nails and hairs, laugh on her own during mid nights.

For those magic exponents, it is said that a Pontianak can be captured and transformed it into a beautiful woman; and then if you prefer, you can marry her as your wife.

In order to conjure a Pontianak, first you will need to find her favorite hang about; i.e. on a big tree branch. Once you have done so, bring some coarse salt to the tree at night and circle the tree with the coarse salt. After that, recite the below mantra:

“Jembalang, jembali,

daun lalang gulong-gulong,

datang engkau ke mari,

Ku tetak dengan parang gudong.”

After that pull some weeds in the vicinity and bring the weeds home. It is believed that the weeds can calm the anger of a Pontianak.

Continue to recite the below mantra when you have reached your home:

“Pontianak mati beranak,

Mati ditimpa tanah tambah,

Krat buluh panjang pandak,

Kan pelemang hati jin puntianak,

Dengan berkat Lailahaillallah.”

The Pontianak will visit the conjurer in a few nights’ time. It will knock on your front door for three times only.

Open your door and greet it and allow it to enter into your altar.

When the Pontianak has shown signs of being tamed; take a 4 inch iron nail and nail it into its nape. By doing so, a Pontianak will transform into a very pretty woman. If you marry this woman, then she will follow all your desires. Provided of cause; the iron nail remains at its location.

The Mao Shan Gold Finger (金手指)

Mao Shan rituals are mainly meant for attack purposes so there is not really too many theories behind them. The “Gold Finger” is a method can be used for attack to kill your enemy or it can also be used to solve many non-medical illnesses. An experienced practitioner can also use the “Gold Finger” instead of the acupuncture needles.

For killing rivals (effective after one year’s time)

1.      Do the mudra of “Golden Nail”.

2.      Recite mantra:

a.       “天皇地皇喊你就去見閻王”

b.      (Sky king, earth king call you; you will see the Lord of Death.)

3.      Recite mantra:

a.       Morning: “ke”

b.      Noon: “hong”

c.       Afternoon: “que”

4.      Point your finger to your target.

For healing purpose

1.      Let the person who seeks help from you be sited.

2.      Feel his/her aura to find out what went wrong.

3.      Recite mantra:

a.       “月光靠月光,背光靠背光”

b.      (The lights of moon, depends on lights of moon; the lights of back, depend on lights of back.)

4.      Recite mantra:

a.       Morning: “ke”

b.      Noon: “hong”

c.       Afternoon: “que”

5.      Point your finger to your target.

This ritual is one of the rare and dangerous Mao Shan rituals in the hands of the unwary. But it is certainly true that for maximum power, a person need to be initiated into Mao Shan system. Thank God for that. J

The Mysterious SEA Jungle Spirits

The deep jungle in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are thought to be sacred places. And as with the mountain ranges; must be respected at all times. Whenever a person is in the domain of jungle and mountain spirits, this person is thought to be in the mercy of such spirits.

There are some protocols that a person would need to follow before entering and while inside the jungle.

Before entering the jungle, according to an old shaman, one has to offer some rice, betel leaves and tobacco to the jungle spirits. Then murmur some prayer such as:

“Greetings to Datuk, I only staying temporary; while my passing is destructive, please do not harm me. Please watch over all four corners, I am visiting my jungle ancestors.”

Then while the person is entering the jungle, it is customary to say:

“Grand pa and grand ma, I apologize for disturbing; your grandchildren want to pass through.”

If one has to answer the call of nature: be it big or small; then this person has to say before hand:

“Please accept my salute grand pa and grand ma, your grandchildren has no manners; I want to urinate/shit.”

The above recitation is important. I lost one friend who urinates behind one bamboo bush in the outer skirt of a Jungle in Perak and he subsequently suffers from high fever right on that night and died subsequently. So please do not be playful inside the jungle.

Jungle spirits are said to be the oldest spirits in SEA. A jungle spirit can take any form, normally it would appear as an old man with long hair and beard while holding a walking stick. For those who perform a 100 day fasting inside a jungle, and if this person passes tests conducted by a jungle spirit; then this person will be taught certain knowledge such as santau and other magical knowledge. Amongst the common test is the appearance of a giant snake called "The Snake of Cintamani”.

Panglima Hitam & Ajian

Panglima Hitam or “The Black Commander” in this context does not refer to any human world military position; rather it is a haunter spirit of some Javanese silat (martial art) streams. It was not so long ago, before starting any martial art performance; the master of arena will perform the ritual for opening arena. The purpose is to prevent any mishaps from happening to the martial art practitioners.

It is said that in some darker martial art streams, a goat or a black cock is slaughtered and its blood is spilled onto the feet of the silat exponents. During the opening ritual, the master will evoke the pressence of Panglima Hitam with offering of benzoic incense and a chicken egg.

Lastly the master will fumigate the arena with benzoic smoke to expel any undesirable spirits. Now the performance of martial art is going to take place, but before that each of the martial art exponents need to request the Panglima Hitam to give instant power of invulnerability.

Test of invulnerability normally in order after the normal martial art show. Now the master again invokes the presence of Panglima Hitam to provide protection to his disciples who are to be tested. The “Aji Payung Allah” (The God’s Umbrella) is normally recited by the master:

“Salam’alaikum salam

Sirollah, Dzatollah,

Payung Allah,

Payungana sapolah tingkahku,

(Ya Hu Allah 3x).”

After the recitation of “Aji Payung Allah”, the master will blow a breath onto his disciples’ heads. Then the disciples are tested with striking with bamboo, keris or even boiling hot oil. Only once a disciple passes the above test; he/she is permitted to practice other mantras. One example is the “Aji Lembu Sekilan” for super strength; or the “Aji Saefi Angin” for long distance travelling.

I am not sure if there is a relation with Panglima Hitam with Datuk Hitam worshipped by some of the Chinese community though.

Demon Queen of The North Coast

Dewi Lanjar is known as one of the “Ratu Setan” or Demon Queen in Javanese folk lore.

Many folks dwelled in the north cost of Java in particular must be familiar with the demon queen ruler of northern Java seas, Dewi Lanjar. This legendary figure is still very influential today, especially in the area of Pelalongan, batang to Banajrnegara areas.

According to folklore with unconfirmed truth, Dewi Lanjar was originally named Dewi Lara Kuning. Her husband died while Dewi was just newlywed; hence the name Goddess Lanjar (The Goddess of Young Widow). In order to dilute her miserable life, she decided to go down south to perform fasting and meditation in the hope that she would see the Queen of the South Coast, Ratu Kidul. Legend has it that, the body of Dewi Lanjar vanishes during the meditation.

Then, one day Ratu Kidul ordered Goddess Lanjar to lead an army to jinn to disturb Raden Bahu who was at that time clearing forest at Gambiren (the current location is in the vicinity of the Anim Bridge and the Sorogenen Pekalongan Bridge). But because Raden Bahu is more powerful, all the jinn army and even the Dewi Lanjar herself were subdued by Raden Bahu.

After she was defeated, Dewi Lanjar decided not to return to the South Coast, so she asked Raden Bahu’s permission to settle and establish her kingdom in Pelalongan with two beautiful ladies: Sri Lorensa and Sri Lopaka.

It is believed that the location of Dewi Lanjar’s palace is at the cost of Pekalongan besides Slamaran River. The atmosphere in the palace is similar to human palace. Local folks also believe that there is an invisible market filled with various commercial activities. However, only a handful gifted people would be able to see it.

Locals believe that Dewi Lanjar has an invisible bank where ordinary human being can borrow money from her with a price to pay of course.

It is not difficult to interact with Goddess Lanjar. One just needs to read the Al-Ikhlas 41 times and sleep at the main door at night. This beautiful goddess will come to you and give you some of her treasures in the exchange of your life, or the life of one of your family members. You will get a fortune soon after the agreement is made. But once after the maturity of such agreement, the main door would be marked with a cross (X) mysteriously. This is sometimes accompanied by the howling of stray dogs and also the appearance of crows on his/her roof top.

Around area of Banjarnegara, Batang, Pekalongan to Tegal, many people have sighted a mysterious chariot driven by two guards dressed in typical Javanese aristocrat stop and go in front of the house marked by a cross (X). The following morning one of the occupants of the house is found dead abruptly; without any pain or sickness.

According to narration from the people who were once invited to the palace of Goddess Lanjar, upon the expiration of the agreement; his soul will by the goddess as her followers until the ends of time. Try at your own risks so be warned.

The Legend of Puteri Gunung Ledang

The above picture belongs to one of the fliers of Puteri Gunung Ledang, The Musical.

Nenek Kebayan is closely related to Puteri Gunung Ledang or the Princess of Mount Ledang, where you see Puteri Gunung Ledang, Nenek Kebayan is around the corner. Hence I post this follow up information abridged from intranet.

The legend of Puteri Gunung Ledang is a well known legend happened in the District of Muar, north of Melaka. It is believed that this beautiful jinn princess still living on top of the Mount Ledang today. She is said to have seven sisters originated from Java, Indonesia. However, her other relatives in Malay Peninsula are:

·         Puteri Gunung Banang in Batu Pahat

·         Puteri Gunung Panti in Kota Tinggi

·         Puteri Gunung Beremban between the border of Johor and Pahang

All of the jinn princess cannot be seen by ordinary human beings. They can only be seen through special training skills such as the Malay shamans.

According to story narrated, Puteri Gunung Ledang stayed at the top of Mount Mahligai. She had a lover who is called Putera Mambang lived on top of Mount Rundok. It was said that the tip of Mount Rundok will approach Mount Mahligai until early morning because the two lovers wanted to spend time together. Since such act was against the curse of jinn; the tip of Rundok Mount are slanted till today.

The two lovers finally got married. After the wedding, they went to Pulau Besar in the Straits of Malaka for honeymoon. One day Putera Mambang accidently pricked his hands with a swing needle and died consequently. So the princess was very sad, and she hugged her husband’s body and sworn that she will never get married again. After that the Puteri went back to Ledang Mount.

As the story goes, Sultan Mahmud of Melaka (1488-1588) subsequently made a marriage proposal to Puteri Gunung Ledang at a later date. But the Puteri requested 7 types of presents:

·         7 trays of mosquito’s heart

·         7 trays of germ’s heart

·         1 barrel of virgin’s tears as her bathing water

·         1 barrel of betel nut juice

·         1 bowl of blood drawn from His Majesty

·         1 bowl of blood drawn from His Majesty’s son, Raja Ahmad

·         A silver and a gold bridge to connect Melaka and Mount Ledang

Sultan Mahmud agreed to grant all requests except the blood of his son Raja Ahmad.

It is believed that Puteri Gunung Ledang’s nonsensical demands were just an excuse to decline the marriage proposal from His Majesty the Sultan of Melaka at that time; as she is still loyal to Putera Mambang who died in Pulau Besar.

Today Mount Ledang is one of well known recreational destinations in Malaysia. However many people still believe Mount Ledang is a sacred place; please do not do anything that is against religious practice. It is said that the Puteri herself will come down very hard on the offenders. So be warned.

The Mountain Jinn: Nenek Kebayan

The above photo shows the legendary Mount Ophir, located in the Ledang District, Northwestern of Johor.

Mountain jinn are the most feared of spirits amongst all in mountain range areas. The Tibetan master Guru Padmasambhava has subdued many of the mountain spirits in Himilayan regions to force these spirits to be Buddhist protectors.  Even so, many of the Himilayan folks are still in fear of such spirits and offering ritual such as smoke offerings are still a daily practice.

In Thailand and Laos mountain ranges, the precious leklai is said to be gifts from mountain jinn to powerful hermits who know the way to please the mountain lords.

In Malaysia, there are still some Malay folks today believe in the existence of a famous spirit “Nenek Kebayan” or sometimes it is also known as “Hantu Nenek Tua” or “The Ghost of Old Grandmother”.

“Nenek Kebayan” is said to be originated from a beautiful royal princess named Gusti Puteri Raden Ajeng Retno Dumila from Java, Indonesia. This royal princess finishes her later years in Redang Mountain. In daylight, when materialize, “Nenek Kebayan” takes the appearance of a very ugly old grandmother with long white hair; her back bend forward while holding a walking stick.

However at night, “Nenek Kabayan” will transform into a very pretty young lady. Some people who have seen Nenek Kebayan said that Nenek Kebayan will sit in a swing and sing her favorite songs.

At times “Nenek Kebayan” will possess a shaman to massage or to perform traditional healing. If “Nenek Kebayan” likes you, she will give you many presents such as keris, precious stones, rings etc. There are many people sworn that they have received presents directly.

There is also a folk game called “Nenek Kebayan looking for grandson”. It is usually played outdoors or a relatively open area. It is played by several people. We will need handkerchief to cover the eyes and a walking stick as a tool. In this game two songs are sang.

How to play the game:

·         Lots are drawn to determine who will be a grandmother. Who is the loser in this poll will be crowned as “Nenek Kebayan” (Nenek) who will find her grandson.

·         Then a handkerchief is used to cover the eyes of “Nenek.

·         A wooden stick is also needed for our newly made “Nenek”.

·         Songs that are sung are as follows:

“Nenek, Nenek, who bent three.
Daytime sleepy, alert at night;
Search for grandchildren where ever they are located,
Nenek, she married to a prince.”

When the grandson finished singing, the “Nenek” starts to sing:

“Grandson, granddaughter cannot escape.
Old lady with a lot of magical power;
Now I am looking for replacement,
Whoever is caught, he is next.”

·         When the catcher finished singing, her would be grandchildren will squat in silence. This catcher will not know the positions of her grandchildren, once the “Nenek” holds one of her grandchild. The “Nenek” would hold the grandchild and start guessing. If the guess is correct, then the player will replace the catcher as “Nenek Kebayan”. If the guess is wrong, the catcher will have to restart the game.

Orang Bunian: People That Whisper

Orang Bunian is said to be grouped under jinn. Their appearance is just like the “elf” in the West. They are also known as “Hantu Bunyi-bunyian” because only their voices can be heard by ordinary people, but not to be seen with naked eyes.

It is said that if you hear the noise of people having parties, shouting, singing, laughing or chatting in the jungle, or near a river; and when you approach the source of the noise, you would not be able to see a single shadow.

OB is also said to be responsible to make a traveler lost in jungle tracking, or they will abduct the living person they like and make human their wives or husbands. OB is believed to possess supernatural power, like to befriend and help human beings. The priority is of course, given to the shaman or “bomoh”. Many shamans make use of OBs’ service in traditional healings.

The old Malays used to borrow utensils for cooking from OBs in big festivals. Everything borrowed, must be returned and arranged in proper order; otherwise OBs will be unpleased. That would be the last thing people want to do, of course.

The OB is said to live in a large community, such as that of our human world. The OBs also led by Sultans, prince and princess. In fact, the OBs are said to be of much beautiful and handsome if we are to compare them to our human counterparts. There are other opinions that the OBs are the offspring of human and jinn. Other theories however mentioned that OBs are originated from pious person but cursed by God because they have defied God’s teaching.

Strange phenomenon that pregnant lady loses her baby during pregnancy also contributed to the work of OBs. The mother will have a dream that she is visited by some old folks to ask for the mother’s permission to fetch the baby. Upon awaken from the dream; the mother would discover that her stomach has already flattened. This can be double confirmed by a doctor’s examination.

This type of news can still be heard now and then in Malaysia. Do you have your side of the story?

In Search of Lek Lai (流鐵)

Those who are into Thai magic or amulets should be familiar with Leklai, Lek-laay or Lek-sa-ming. Leklai also termed as the black jewel of Thailand. Real leklai is exceedingly hard to find and can fetch up to very high price. Lek Lai is known as "fluid metal" (流鐵) amongst Chinese collectors.

Information provided here is translated from Ajan Boon, Ajan Ya-Kong and Ajan Choom. It is a common belief in Thailand that leklai can move about freely and has power to overcome harms from weapon.

The Arjans (Masters) have divided leklai into 2 main categories:

1. The Thai hermits will gather some material and use their meditative power to turn fluidic leklai into greenish rock formation.

2. The Koth Leklai (the oldest leklai) can be seen hanging out on cliffs. If people go into deep jungle can still get them.

If a leklai is dipped into natural honey, it can turn into dark brown in color.

Now that you know how a “real” Lek Lai looks like. You will need to depart on a trip in search for Lek Lai. My last information was that real Lek Lai is almost extinct; if found will be very difficult. Well, we will never know when our luck strikes.

There are some tell tale sign on Lek Lai where abouts:

1.     Cliff with clean surroundings, free from animal droppings and wild glass.

2.     Shoot with your gun, if it fails to fire no matter how many times you tried; then most possible there will be Lek Lai around.

Once you have found the place there is Lek Lai, you will need to prepare for a ceremony to attract and cut Lek Lai. Now, prepare some meat and non-meat offerings for the jungle spirit. Then start praying and making a wish that you would donate part of your profit to charity.

Now draw a protective circle to protect yourself from the jungle spirits that may disturb you or stop you from getting Lek Lai. After that is done, you can proceed to call out Lek Lai.

When Lek Lai is out from its hiding place, use a knife to cut it. After this is done, do another round of praying to thank the spirits and promise to use Lek Lai for good.

Good luck Lek Lai hunting. If not, just drop in eBay and there will be plenty to buy as low as $1 depending on your luck. Or my arjan friend would be glad to help. :))))

I thank the arjan very much for letting me share this article.

The Medium of The Dead (問米婆)

This is a common method of spirit communication technique also known by other name: 問米, 帶亡,牽亡, 過陰. How it is called depends on the place of the origin of course. 問米 means “asking rice”. This is because in the ritual, rice is thrown to “open” the way to the underworld. This is a Chinese custom practice in Hong Kong, Taiwan, SEA and amongst many Chinese societies. I will not go into details of explaining other terms.

There are still some famous mediums in operation in Malaysian villages. Those who live in Malaysia and Singapore must have heard of them. The famous mediums will need you to take a number few months before the appointment. Some even set a rule of how many person she would consult every day.

It is not difficult to become a medium. An aspiring student needs only to prepare the altar setup as shown:

Then she would close her eyes and recite the first mantra. After certain time of mantra recitation, the person will go into trancelike condition. Her soul is then believed to go down the underworld to fetch the person she wants to find. Once the dead is found, the dead will possess the medium. After that the requesters can start conversation proper.

請神咒:打馬將軍帶亡神,帶亡神帶我見亡魂某某人。

(Meaning: Horseman, please bring me to see so and so.)

Once the conversation between the dead and the living is over, the medium will then recite the second mantra to send the dead soul back to the underworld:

送神咒:打馬將軍帶亡神,弟子送你上云程,那里來的那里去,功德圓滿到太清。

(Meaning: Horseman, I send you back from where you come from.)

According to the Ah Mah medium who is an expert of this field, the underworld is very dark and cold, only those who are met with timely dead are allowed to enter. Those who die of untimely dead cannot be granted entry. So those are the wandering souls in our world.

N/B: Please respect others custom before commenting as you want people to respect your believe and your customs. Thank you.
